Metlifecare nurse named Nurse of the Year
Hillsborough Heights Village nurse Helen Cohen has been named Geneva New Zealand Nurse of the Year 2020.
Geneva launched the award to recognise the courageous efforts and dedication of nurses and midwives and commemorate the 200th birthday year of Florence Nightingale and the World Health Organisation’s International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. Geneva Staffing is one of New Zealand’s leading health staffing agencies.
Many courageous nurses and midwives were nominated, but one nurse stood out,” said Geneva spokesperson Laurelin Okan of Helen’s nomination.
Helen wins an Air New Zealand Deluxe Mystery Break for two people, which includes return travel with Air New Zealand, a rental car waiting for them at the airport and 4-5-star accommodation.
On receiving the award, Helen acknowledged this year had been a year like no other. “I’ve been a nurse for a very long time and it’s still my passion after all these years. It’s been very trying for everybody recently, so thank you so much.”
Metlifecare clinical director Tanya Bish, who attended the award ceremony, offered her congratulations: “Metlifecare is proud and fortunate to work with many amazing nurses and, while Helen is no exception, I would describe her as exceptional…
“The first International Year of the Nurse we’ve celebrated has brought with it some unique challenges, including the pandemic. As we grapple to adapt to the new normal, nurses like Helen have continued to be there for not only our residents but also her nursing colleagues. I myself have been a recipient of her kindness.”
One of the many nominations stated: “For Helen it is about ensuring everyone’s voice is heard, no matter what… My words only scratch the surface of what she brings to this village, the residents, their families and staff.”
