Greenwood Park’s Quail Trail – an interactive journey
09 April 2026

At Greenwood Park in Tauranga, the much-loved ‘Quail Trail’ has become more than a peaceful 20-minute nature walk – it’s now an immersive learning experience, thanks to a group of passionate residents.
Led by Carol Fuller, the Greenwood Park Enviro Group recently launched two beautifully designed leaflets, each supported by the Enviro Group grant from Metlifecare.
The first introduces walkers to 11 native tree species growing along the trail. Each tree was photographed, researched, and described in terms of its habit, seasonal features, and the wildlife it attracts. Laminated information sheets are stored in handy drop boxes at both ends of the trail, making the walk low-tech but wonderfully engaging.
The second leaflet, Trees on the Quail Trail used in Māori Medicine (Rongoā), adds a fascinating cultural dimension. Covering 13 additional species, it explains how these trees were traditionally used in Rongoā. From leaves to bark, each plant holds a story of healing, reminding walkers of the deep connection between people and the natural world.
“It’s been really well received by everyone and it’s so lovely to see residents’ grandchildren out on the trail, especially during the school holidays,” says Carol.
The Quail Trail project shows how resident-led initiatives can enrich village life. In this case, combining exercise, learning, and respect for Aotearoa’s native heritage. It’s a gift that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike for years to come.
