Hillsborough Heights resident Mehar Singh has been awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for her outstanding services to seniors and the community.

The mother of four arrived in New Zealand from Fiji 30 years ago, and since then has worked tirelessly as a volunteer in the aged care sector and local community. Between running regular charity fundraisers and a lunch delivery service for low-decile schools, Mehar works with social service agencies to support those in need. She’s also founder of the New Zealand Fijian Senior Citizens Association.

“I like volunteering in the community as it enables me to make a difference in people’s lives and connect with people from all walks of life,” says Mehar.

“Getting a Queen’s Service Medal was humbling, especially being recognised alongside fellow New Zealanders who do amazing work in the community.

For daughter and Metlifecare staff member Rehana Singh, the QSM is wonderful recognition of her mother’s generosity and compassion.

“Mum has always been passionate about helping others,” says Rehana.

“Growing up, we used to go with our parents to help the poor. One of my strongest memories is back in Fiji when our parents took us to an orphanage. Mum cooked lunch for the entire orphanage, and we helped serve the kids and staff there. We’re very proud of her achievement and all she does for the community.”

In fact, according to Rehana, Mehar’s remarkable community spirit is one of the reasons she moved into a Metlifecare village.

“Dad wanted less stress and she wanted more time for her charity and community work!”
