Helen with resident Ann Connor

After nearly a decade with the Metlifecare team, Helen Cohen has embraced the challenge of a newly created position: Wellness Coordinator. Now, a year into her new role, Helen talks to us about the support she provides residents and their families.

Q: Can you describe your role as a Wellness Coordinator?

A: My role focuses on the overall wellness of independent living residents. From promoting ways to live better, to helping them and their families navigate changes in their lives and access support they may need. I share guidance on community services available, allied health providers, and in-home help (private or funded). I also advise on what they can expect from these service providers, so residents and families can contact them with confidence to make arrangements.

Q: Can you give some examples of the guidance you provide to residents?

A: I cover a range of services, including personal care, from showering to medication management. I can also help someone navigate the healthcare system, understand their care options, and even advise on accessing practical day-to-day assistance, for example household cleaning. I aim to provide tailored personal guidance to each resident. It’s about helping a person realise the services they’re actually entitled to and ensuring they get the support they need to live their best life.

Q: Talk us through the process of booking an appointment with you.

A: Residents and their families can initially book an in-person appointment with their Wellness Coordinator through reception. The appointment will occur in the village Wellness Centre, where they can confidentially chat with me. I give them my advice and suggest local support services, where appropriate. The resident or their family can then contact the services and make any arrangements referencing the information I provide. If any follow-up is needed, with the resident’s permission, it can be done either over the phone or by email with their family.

Q: What are some benefits of your role for residents and their families?

A: I’m a go-to resource for information and support. Many residents feel lost when accessing support or dealing with health issues. I can help guide them through the process, whether that involves talking them through the transition to care process or simply offering a listening ear. I hope my support empowers a resident to take charge of their health and wellness.

Q: Lastly, what’s your superpower as a Wellness Coordinator?

A: I’d say my superpower is being a super listener and, of course, empathy. I have buckets of empathy! Many residents just need someone to chat to and to know that they are not alone. It’s so personally rewarding to help residents feel connected and heard. I’m here for them!
