One step at a time with Nicky
21 January 2026

Strong leadership, community focus and continuity of care in central Remuera.
There’s never a dull day at 7 Saint Vincent, and Village Manager Nicky Rijns wouldn’t have it any other way. “If I’m bored, that’s when I know I’m in trouble,” she laughs. With four years under her belt as a Village Manager and a background in nursing, Nicky’s energy, compassion and determination have set the rhythm of this much-loved Remuera village.
“I trained as a nurse in South Africa, completing a five-year degree, and I’ve always loved caring for people,” she explains. “As my career progressed, I naturally gravitated towards management. I like things organised, I enjoy achieving things, and I want everyone to feel safe.”
This journey from Clinical Manager to Village Manager came, she says, “one step at a time”, a life lesson she learned hiking South Africa’s famous Otter Trail. “You just put one foot in front of the other, and before you know it, you’ve climbed the mountain. That’s how I approach life and work. Every day, you just keep moving forward.”
That steady focus has served her and her village well. In recognition of her dedication, Metlifecare recently honoured Nicky with The Extraordinaries Annual Leadership Award, celebrating her outstanding contribution to residents, staff, and the wider Metlifecare community. She describes the win with her usual humility: At first, I was shocked. Then I thought, I must be on the right track and quickly shifted my focus to what’s coming next.”\
That mix of care, optimism, and faith defines her leadership style and perhaps explains why residents and staff alike are drawn to her light-hearted energy. “Outside of work, spending time with my three grown-up children and grandchildren fills my cup. I also have a supportive husband who’s been cheering me on since the age of 17!”
That upbeat attitude perfectly suits the close-knit nature of 7 Saint Vincent’s resident community. Many have lived in Remuera their entire lives, some went to school together, and others’ families have known each other for generations. “It’s a very peaceful and respectful community. Our residents are thoughtful, accomplished people who care deeply for one another. Over the years, I’ve come to know them well. Their life stories are fascinating and full of heart.”
With the new care suites now open, the village continues to evolve while retaining its classic warmth and elegance.
“Having the care home within the village gives our residents greater confidence as their care needs evolve, which is so important to them and their families.”
