Metlifecare, New Zealand's third-largest retirement village and aged care provider, has officially opened its new Parkside Care Home in Hillsborough, Auckland. The purpose-built 59-suite care home replaces the village's original 50-year-old facility and expands access to modern rest home and hospital-level aged care for older New Zealanders.
The opening ceremony was officiated by local Maungakiekie MP, Greg Fleming, who joined Metlifecare Chief Executive Earl Gasparich, residents, staff and invited guests to celebrate the milestone.
The Parkside Care Home represents an investment of around $50 million and introduces premium care suites to Parkside Village for the first time, significantly enhancing the village's residential aged care offering while preserving the strong care community that has existed on the site for generations.
Earl Gasparich says the opening marks an important new chapter for one of Auckland's longest-established retirement villages.
"We’re proud to introduce a modern aged care home that is designed to deliver the comfort, dignity and quality clinical care today's residents expect.”
The new care home complements Parkside Village's existing specialised dementia care unit, providing residents with a full continuum of care.
"Most people choose a retirement village because they want to continue living independently and enjoy everything village life offers – company, security and great amenities. However, knowing they can remain in the community they know and love, should their care needs change over time, is becoming increasingly important to them and their families,” says Earl.

Parkside Village has a long history in the Hillsborough community. Originally established by the Freemasons in the 1950s, the village later became Selwyn Heights before being acquired by Metlifecare in 2022 and renamed Parkside Village.
Today, more than 340 residents call Parkside Village home.
According to New Zealand demographic projections, the number of older New Zealanders requiring retirement living and residential aged care is expected to increase significantly over the coming decades. Investments such as Parkside Care Home are designed to help meet this growing need.
“New Zealand’s ageing population means the need for high-quality aged care will continue to grow in the years ahead. Our strategy is to invest in modern care that gives older New Zealanders greater choice and confidence about their future.”
Construction of the new care home began in 2024, with residents moving into the building following a dawn blessing led by local iwi, Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua on Monday 13 July.
