Merivale Mall on Papanui Road has stores covering fashion, homewares, beauty, food, and everyday services, with a New World supermarket. The wider strip along Papanui Road adds independent cafés, restaurants, and specialist shops. Christchurch's city centre with Ballantynes, Westfield Riccarton, the Riverside Market, and a full range of services is about ten minutes away.

Christchurch is a compact, largely flat city, easy to navigate by car, bus, or bicycle. Bus routes on Papanui Road, close to the village, connect to the central city and wider suburbs. The city centre is about two kilometres away, straightforward by car or e-bike for those who want the independence of getting there themselves. Christchurch Airport is around 15 minutes by car.
