A well-connected South Auckland suburb with its own shopping centre, good motorway access, and a train station on the Southern Line. Takanini has grown considerably in recent years and has a solid range of everyday services close by. Papakura town centre is a short drive south; Manukau city centre is around 15 minutes north.

Southgate Shopping Centre, with a supermarket, everyday retail, and services, is directly across the road from the village. Papakura town centre, a few minutes south, has a broader range of shops, pharmacies, cafés, and dining. Manukau city centre is about 15 minutes north, with a large mall, cinemas, and restaurants.

Counties Medical has locations in both Papakura and Takanini, offering general practice and urgent care. Takanini Family Health Care is at 2 Te Napi Drive, Takanini.
